 Personal Safety and Equipment

  • Wear a Helmet: Wearing a helmet is mandatory and crucial for protection in rural environments.

  • Protective Gear: Wear suitable clothing to prevent scratches from branches (long pants/sleeves) and use gloves for better grip.

  • Visibility: Use bright clothing, reflectors, and lights (front white/rear red) if riding in low-light conditions.

  • Enclosed Footwear: Always wear fully enclosed shoes to protect your feet.

2. Cycling Conduct on Farm Roads

  • Ride in Single File: Cyclists must ride in single file, especially on narrow farm roads, and not abreast of others, except when overtaking.

  • Stay Left: Keep to the left side of the road, close to the edge.

  • Hands on Handlebars: Maintain control by keeping at least one hand on the handlebars at all times.

  • No Reckless Riding: Do not deliberately swerve or perform acrobatics.

  • Remain Seated: Remain seated in the saddle while riding.

3. Safety Around Farm Machinery and Traffic

  • Be Visible to Drivers: Assume farm vehicles cannot see you. Use lights and wear high-visibility clothing.

  • Yield to Larger Vehicles: While cyclists have a right to be on the road, it is safer to be proactive and allow heavy tractors or machinery to pass.

  • Passing Safely: When passing parked vehicles or farm equipment, watch for sudden movements and maintain a safe passing distance.

  • Slow Down: Reduce speed, especially when visibility is low or when riding near corners.

4. Operational and Environmental Rules

  • Follow Designated Trails: Keep to designated tracks or roads; do not cross between trails or destroy vegetation.

  • Close Gates: Always leave gates as you found them (closed or open) to prevent livestock from escaping.

  • No Littering: Take all trash with you.

  • Check Bike Condition: Ensure brakes, tires, and chains are in good working order before riding.

5. Restrictions

  • No Alcohol/Drugs: Do not cycle under the influence of any substance that could impair ability.

  • Supervise Children: Ensure children are supervised at all times on the farm.

  • Respect Private Property: If you are visiting a farm, ensure you have permission and follow the landowner's specific rules.
